Future Wave

It was a typical August afternoon, warm and shinny, just a perfect day to go for a walk in the seaside. Costa da Caparica was the nearest place and I thought it was a good choice to chill out. I sat down in the sand and closed my eyes feeling the soft breeze, the smell of the sea, the sound of the waves and the seagulls above, enjoying this pleasant and really peaceful moment.
Suddenly I opened my eyes and I looked around astonished seeing a reality completely different from what I was sensing a few minutes ago. The pollution, the surprising lack of sensibility of the authorities towards the consequences of wild progress in the surrounding environment and the so frequent attitude of crossing the arms and do nothing struck me.
Many species of fishes have been extinct and the erosion of the soil has become a severe problem in this area. The increase in the tourism in this area has been a positive factor in the economy but at the same time has a negative impact in the environment.
One of the consequences of erosion is that the detritus are pulled down to the sea and other areas in the coast. Some measures such as building barriers and cutwaters have been taken to avoid or at least reduce the effects of the increasing erosion. However, this problem has not been solved, it has just been postponed.
In this moment the Polis program for Costa da Caparica involves many important measures that will make this a more pleasant place. Unfortunately the measures taken to requalify the area are not enough. We can not unmake what has been done. We can not go back and change the past.
However there are many simple things we can do now to prevent a total destruction of the beautiful landscape of Costa da Caparica. We will not allow the future wave to destroy this precious landscape. We must take measures so that we may enjoy all the potentialities this place offers us. The wave of the future must be seen as an effort to preserve and improve the wonderful place Costa da Caparica can be.
I stood up and looked hopefully at the sea. I am sure this future wave will come.
